Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Prominent ears can have a potentially devastating
psychological impact, particularly for children who may be subject to
teasing and ridicule by peers. Ear reshaping (or otoplasty) can be
performed to set protuberant ears back closer to the head or to reduce
the size of large ears to create a natural, pleasing configuration.
This procedure is performed on children over the age of 4 when the ears
are fully developed but can be performed on adults as well. Surgical
correction of protuberant ears involves pinpointing the exact
underlying cosmetic and anatomic irregularities.
Interestingly,
contouring the shape of the ears to a more ‘normal’ orientation can
boost confidence and overall psychological well-being. Patients are
usually thrilled with their results as even minor alterations to the
ear anatomy can yield significant improvements.
Ear surgery can also be performed to
correct elongated ear lobes or ‘torn’ earlobes from wearing ear rings.
As we age, so too do our ear lobes. The lobes begin to lose volume and
appear elongated or stretched. Minimally invasive procedures such as
the injection of fillers into the ear lobules can create full, youthful
ear lobes. Such procedures are minor and can be performed in less than
an hour and under local or just topical anesthesia.
